BAS Controls Engineer / Programmer

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the University Hospitals Trust (UHT), the Building Automation Systems (BAS) Controls Engineer/Programmer designs, programs, installs, and commissions HVAC and facility management software. They specialize in creating sequences of operations, integrating protocols like BACnet/Modbus, and optimizing system performance for energy efficiency in commercial buildings.

Essential Employee This position supports critical facility functions and may require on-site presence during emergencies, inclement weather, or other operational disruptions.

Patient Contact This position will have direct patient contact. Potential for exposure to various healthcare-related illnesses normally associated with a hospital environment.

Working Environment Indoor and outdoor facility work, including exposure to construction sites, mechanical spaces, extreme temperatures and excessive noise levels. While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders/stairs, talk, hear; uses hands to handle or touch objects or controls. The colleague must occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Programming & Configuration: Develop custom DDC control logic and create graphical user interfaces (GUI) for operator workstations.
  • System Integration: Integrate HVAC, lighting, and security systems using protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Commissioning & Testing: Start up, troubleshoot, and fine-tune BAS software and hardware to meet design specifications.
  • Design & Documentation: Interpret mechanical/electrical schematics, create sequence of operations, and document as-built drawings.
  • Field Support: Provide technical support to installation technicians and subcontractors, ensuring proper system installation and performance.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient in industry platforms such as Tridium Niagara (N4), Johnson Controls, Distech, or Automated Logic.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC mechanical systems and electrical circuits.
  • Understanding of languages, block programming, line-based programming.
  • Basic networking knowledge.
  • Protocols: BACnet IP/MSTP, Modbus.
Preferred
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills of automation and controls systems.
  • Ability to manage complex repair projects
  • Experience in a healthcare setting.

 

REGULATORY & COMPLIANCE

This position is subject to compliance with Joint Commission (TJC), CMS, OSHA, and applicable state and federal regulations. The colleague in this role is expected to maintain current competency documentation as required by UHT policy.
